Cold Process Soap The art and science of soapmaking has been around for a long  time and the basic ingredients have remained the same.  The soapmaking process is called saponification, this is when you transform an animal fat or fruit & vegetable oils into soap. Saponification  is achieved by combining  fats or oils with an alkali. The alkali in cold process soap is sodium hydroxide (LYE) used in bar soaps or potassium hydroxide for liquid soaps.  Although the tools may have changed we still make soap as our ancestors did in ancient times.
